Sofa Measurement Glossary

What do seat height, depth, width, and height really mean?

Updated over a month ago

Seat Height:

  • The seat height is measured from the ground to the top of the crown on the seat cushion. At McGee & Co., we tend to stick to lower seat heights paired with a deeper seat depth to provide a loungier sit.

Seat Depth:

  • Measured from the front of the seat to the back cushion or back of frame if no cushions are included. This is one of the most influential measurements in making a piece of furniture comfortable.

Seat Width:

  • To find the seat width, measure the distance between arms or the width of the overall seat if there are no arms. This dimension is particularly important when it comes to lounge and dining chairs where space is more limited.

Back Height:

  • A comfortable back height is incredibly dependent on the individual’s height. A lower back height will visually look more modern (lower than 30”), whereas a taller back height will be slightly more supportive and traditional in look (higher than 32”).

Back Pitch:

  • Back pitch refers to the angle of the in or out back. This angle helps furniture have a more natural and ergonomic sit. Without the presence of a pitch, the overall sit could feel stiff and uncomfortable. A standard pitch for sofas is around 10 degrees but can increase depending on the desired sit.

Arm Height:

  • Arms in furniture act as a natural resting spot so it’s important to consider the height to ensure a comfortable sit. A comfortable arm height is variable depending on the seat height - typically a usable arm is between 5-8” higher than the seat. Arm width can also factor into whether the arms are usable. Anything below 3” could be uncomfortable to rest your arm on.

Cushion Fill:

  • What makes a cushion comfortable is highly subjective. Some people like a more firm sit, which a tight back/seat provides. While others might want the sink-in feel that a down cushion offers. The density of the foam used - along with the ratio of down or poly in the cushion - can massively influence the firmness. At McGee & Co., a more relaxed cushion look is favored over a stiff highly structured cushion.
