How does sales tax exemption work for Designer Trade members?

McGee & Co. is required to collect sales tax unless you provide a valid resale certificate for the state where your order ships. Here's how to set up your exemption.

What you need

  • A valid resale certificate for each state where your order ships or is delivered — not your billing address. Please note we can't accept a "use tax" license; it must be a resale certificate.

  • The certificate must match the business name and email on your McGee & Co. trade account.

How to set it up

  1. Prepare a valid resale certificate for each delivery state.

  2. Submit it online through our tax-exemption portal: https://app.certexpress.com/?c=583754536667615674446b45704b465264513d3d:bd851b847b154975ae55fb5c4962a058 If you previously sent a certificate by email, please resubmit it through the portal so we can process it correctly.

  3. We'll review your certificate within 1–2 business days. You'll receive an automated email once it's approved, and your tax-exempt status will be applied to your trade account.

  4. Make sure you're logged into your trade account when ordering so the exemption is applied at checkout.

Good to know

  • Taxes paid on orders placed before your exemption is approved can't be refunded retroactively — exemption applies to future orders only.

  • For a pending (unshipped) order, we can cancel it and re-place it once your exemption is active.

FAQs

  • Why am I still being charged tax after submitting my certificate? It may not be approved or applied yet. Confirm you submitted through the portal and that the details match your account; once approved, tax is removed automatically at checkout.

  • Can I get a refund for tax paid before approval? No — exemption applies only to future orders.

  • How do I get a revised invoice with tax removed? After approval, request a revised invoice for a pending order, or it may be reissued automatically.

  • Tax still shows after approval? Contact us to have the invoice corrected and resent, and confirm tax is gone before paying.
